Nine O'clock Players, Los Angeles, CA

HAPPILY EVER AFTER...AFTER ALL

.

"Commissioned for the Players' 75th anniversary and directed by L.A. treasure Nick DeGruccio, Scott Guy's delightful book never panders to the kids-and gives savvy adults a laugh or two by having one of the three pigs (Mary Ferrara) ask an annoying Alice in Wonderland (Andrea Walters), "How would you like to go to the moon, Alice?" or by creating Red Riding Hood (Pam Schroer) as a crepe-hanging deadpanned stage version of Winona Ryder in Beetlejuice. DeGregorio's score is also fresh and contagious. The production values are impressive throughout, including John Hogg's clever set pieces, expensively miked sound by Jeanie McCarthy and Dean Mora, colorful costuming by Carol Onofrio, and striking lighting by Lisa D. Katz. Towering above everything, however, is the ensemble: an assemblage of gifted comediennes and a few dynamic vocalists. If these are the Ladies Who Lunch, count me in for second helpings."

Critic's Choice,  BackStage West, Travis Michael Holder

"Director Nick DeGruccio and the ladies of the ensemble take this pearl of a show and magnify pure magic, as they cavort, scheme and chase each other around the stage and down the aisles to the audience's delight."   - Recommended,  NoHoLA

Enchanted Sleeping Beauty

"Enchanted Sleeping Beauty marks a high point for the Nine O'clock Players.  The  production impeccably staged by Nick DeGruccio and sumptuously designed, is a definite crowd-pleaser: lively, tuneful and lovely to look at."  - Los Angeles Times, Critic's Choice

"This ‘Jack’ knows how to have fun.  Enthusiasm, a sense of fun and unself-conscious, credible performing skills go a long way under L.A. Ovation Award-winning director Nick DeGruccio, who has smoothly shaped the show with the company’s strengths in mind.”

THE HISTORY OF MUSICAL THEATRE (IN 42 MINUTES AND 28 SECONDS)

Touring Los Angeles Schools

Mary Jo Mecca, Kevin McMahon

...is an educational revue that encompasses the rich history of the American Musical Theatre. Developed specifically by the Musical Theatre Guild for youth audiences, the piece spans the gamut of early shows such as ROSE-MARIE direct to the groundbreaking musicals of SHOW BOAT and OKLAHOMA! and illustrates the sources, progression and development of the art form up through the present fare recently seen on Broadway (RENT, RAGTIME and THE LION KING). In addition, the educational piece explains, with humor, the elements that make up a musical and tracks the development of the genre with the significant historical events of each decade. The cast includes four actor/singers and is performed with live piano and is currently part of the prestigious Music Center on Tour program.

The American Musical Theatre is regarded by scholars to be one of only two truly American Art forms. THE HISTORY OF MUSICAL THEATRE (IN 42 MINUTES AND 28 SECONDS) is an excellent introduction to this unique American treasure and hopes to inspire and excite a new generation of theatre artists and audiences.
